The Haarlemmerhout is the oldest urban forest in the Netherlands. Each year on 4 May we commemorate the fallen with a Memorial Concert here. On 5 May it is where we celebrate freedom with the Liberation Pop Festival.

The Haarlemmerhout is the oldest urban forest in the Netherlands. It dates from 1560. The adjacent forest dates back as far as the first century. The path along the deer park leads to the pond which during World War II was part of an anti-tank moat around Dreefzicht, the German headquarters in Haarlem. The old trees are interspersed with new plantings as many trees were cut for firewood during and after World War II. Both the Memorial Concert on 4 May and the Liberation Pop Festival on 5 May take place in this park every year.
