With a shot fired from the gymnasium of the Bavoschool, the resistance liquidated the Haarlem policeman and NSB-member Fake Krist. The German occupiers retaliated by setting fire to four surrounding houses and, a day later, on 26 February 1944, by publicly shooting ten members of the resistance on the Westergracht. This statue of the Grieving Woman recalls the deaths of these ten resistance members. It was made by Oswald Wenckebach, on the initiative of the Committee Resistance Monument Westergracht. The statue, which was unveiled in 1949, is the one of the locations for the ceremonies held in Haarlem every year during the National Remembrance Day on 4 May. The monument has been adopted by the Bavo primary school in Haarlem.
