Video: Canadian forces arrive in Haarlem

On 8 May 1945, after five years of occupation, the Canadian forces rode onto the Grote Markt in Haarlem. They were on their way to IJmuiden to assemble, disarm and send German troops back to Germany. The joy of freedom felt by all ‘Haarlemmers’ was unprecedented. People were cheering, crying and waving flags. They showered the soldiers with flowers and lifted them up on their shoulders. A plaquette, in happy memory of this day, was mounted on the wall of city hall in 1995.
