Gemma Ray maakt pop-noir muziek. Bevrijdingspop is erg blij dat zij haar Nederlandse debut maakt in de Hout in Haarlem.
“Blowing sugary femme-pop out of the water, Gemma Ray is untouchable” – NME
“Wondrous. A true alternative to the wan psych-folk of today’s lady-pop troupe” - MOJO
Released at the end of 2009 , critical acclaim has been astounding, and deservedly so. Gemma Ray’s first album The Leader was released against a backdrop of illness, which left her unable to tour and promote it. She instead stayed at home and wrote and recorded “Lights Out Zoltar!”, and so it is no surprise that its transcendent beauty (courtesy of her spine-tingling vocal harmonies and enviable guitar-playing) is laced with darkness.
“Had Phil Spector forced his girl groups in a more noir-soundtrack direction, this might've been the result. Ray has a truly impressive feel for vintage pop flourishes, layered to lavish effect.” - SPIN
Back in good health, Gemma Ray is now on a mission to make up for lost time, and her prolific nature has already led to the completion of a covers album, recorded spontaneously in New York with Matt Verta-Ray of Heavy Trash. Titled “It’s A Shame About Gemma Ray”, it will see the light of day in June 2010.
“Given the ambitiousness of her sound, I expected Ray to be backed by an extremely large band when she came to New York. But it turns out she’s capable of creating quite a wall of sound all by her lonesome using a series of effects pedals and, at one point, a large kitchen knife that she rubbed across her guitar’s strings like a Girl Scout trying to spark a campfire.”- VANITY FAIR
